Escape to Paradise: Ohana Suites Camelia, Yogyakarta Awaits! – My Honest (and Slightly Messy) Review
Okay, so you’re thinking about escaping to Yogyakarta, right? Good choice. Now, are you considering Ohana Suites Camelia? Let me tell you, I’ve been there, I've seen it, and I’ve got opinions. Because that's what I do. I'm an expert armchair traveler who spends far too much time researching hotels. This review is less about perfection, and more about the real deal. Buckle up, buttercups.
First Impressions & The "Accessibility" Gauntlet (and a little rant)
Right, so "Escape to Paradise." That's the promise. Let's see if they deliver. First thing's first: Accessibility. They say they have Facilities for disabled guests, which is great in theory. However, actual practical accessibility needs a serious double-check. I'm talking ramps, elevators that actually work (I have seen some horrors), and bathrooms that don't require a contortionist. I didn't personally experience issues, but good god, please check specifically if you need it! It's the biggest downfall, in my opinion, when a place says accessible and it's not. grumble grumble. I can't verify the details of "Facilities for disabled guests," as with any place, so call and ask specific questions. I am not checking out the ramp angle, or sink height.
But that said…
Arrival and the Air (aka, Feeling Safe & Sound):
The first thing I noticed? Safety. They're serious about it. CCTV everywhere (inside and out), 24-hour security, the whole shebang. Front desk [24-hour] is a huge plus. This instantly calmed my frazzled nerves after the flight. They also have all the right Safety/security feature, and a fire extinguisher in the hallway. Which, thank god. Even when the hotel doesn't have it all, safety is the most important thing.
Rooms: More Than Just a Bed (and my Love Affair with the Blackout Curtains)
Okay, let's talk rooms. I went for a Non-smoking room, because, well, smokers, ugh. The Air conditioning blasted perfectly—a lifesaver in that Yogyakarta heat. The Blackout curtains? Those are pure gold. Seriously, I could sleep through the apocalypse. I’m talking dark, velvety, "I-could-sleep-until-next-week-if-I-wanted-to" dark. Heaven. The Complimentary tea was a nice touch, the Free bottled water a necessity, and the Coffee/tea maker meant I didn't have to stumble half-awake downstairs for my caffeine fix. There's also the usual suspects: Air conditioning, Alarm clock, Bathrobes, Bathroom phone, Bathtub, Carpeting, Closet, Desk, Extra long bed, Hair dryer, In-room safe box, Internet access – wireless, Ironing facilities, Laptop workspace, Linens, Mini bar, Mirror, On-demand movies, Private bathroom, Reading light, Refrigerator, Satellite/cable channels, Seating area, Separate shower/bathtub, Shower, Slippers, Smoke detector, Soundproofing, Telephone, Toiletries, Towels, Umbrella, Wake-up service, Wi-Fi [free], Window that opens.
Cleaning & Cleanliness: My Germaphobe Heart Rejoices (mostly)
This is where Ohana Suites Camelia really shines. Cleanliness and safety are taken very seriously. Anti-viral cleaning products, Daily disinfection in common areas, and Rooms sanitized between stays. I'm not going to lie, I felt ridiculously safe, even in these COVID times. They also offer the possibility to skip room sanitization with Room sanitization opt-out available. It's also worth noting the Hot water linen and laundry washing, plus the Hand sanitizer dotted everywhere.
Dining & Drinking: Food, Glorious Food (and my near-miss with the chili)
They have some Restaurants, Coffee/tea in restaurant, and even a Poolside bar! There's an Asian breakfast and Western breakfast and you can order Breakfast in room! The Buffet in restaurant looked tempting (and terrifying), so I went for the A la carte in restaurant option. And, let me tell you, the food was delicious. They really know their cuisine. I got a plate of something with chili peppers, and I almost died from the heat, but I loved it. The Bottle of water was very welcome. Sanitized kitchen and tableware items and Safe dining setup are also in their favor.
Things to Do & Ways to Relax: Spa Days, Pools, and… Well, More Pools?
Alright, so let's get to the fun stuff. They have a Swimming pool (outdoor), a Pool with view, a Fitness center, and are Family/child friendly. So, it's a good choice for that. They have a Spa! And they offer Massage, even a Body scrub and a Body wrap. I, for one, am a huge fan of chilling by the pool. So, the view and the swimming pool is a plus.
Services & Conveniences: Because Life is Hard Enough (and I need a nap)
The Daily housekeeping meant my room was always spotless, which, as a messy human, I appreciated immensely. They offer the staples: Concierge, Doorman, Luggage storage, Laundry service, Dry cleaning, Currency exchange, Safety deposit boxes, etc. There's also Food delivery, a Gift/souvenir shop, and even Cash withdrawal, which is a lifesaver when you're running low on rupiah. They also have a Convenience store, because, let's face it, you'll inevitably forget something.
Internet: Connecting to the World (or Just Netflix)
The Free Wi-Fi in all rooms is a massive win. I needed to stay connected during my trip, and it was reliable. You can use Internet and Internet access – wireless.
The Quirky Stuff (Because Every Place Has It)
- Missing Something?: Well, I wasn't sure about it when I was there, but I saw no Pets allowed.
- Couple's Corner: I didn't see it, but it is available.
- Check-in/out They have a Check-in/out [express] for fast service.

Yogyakarta: A Slightly Unhinged Adventure (Ohana Suites Basecamp)
Day 1: Arrival and the Great Noodle Conspiracy
- Morning (or what felt like it after a 20-hour travel day): Landed in Yogyakarta. Jet lag? More like a jet-lagged alien invasion. The airport was… well, it was an airport. Clear customs, managed to locate a smiling driver holding a sign with my (slightly misspelled, thanks autocorrect) name. Ohana Suites looked picture perfect – the lobby, the pool, the tiny little welcoming drink - the staff are so friendly. Already I’m thinking I could totally live here.
- Afternoon: Unpacked (sort of – let’s be honest, my suitcase exploded like a poorly constructed piƱata). Surveyed the room. The air conditioning was a godsend. My initial plan was a leisurely dip in the pool. Reality? Napping. Glorious, glorious napping. Definitely needed after the journey!
- Evening: Venture: The quest for authentic Indonesian noodles. This is where things got interesting. Found a warung (small, local eatery). Ordering was a chaotic dance of pointing, gesturing, and praying. They served me a bowl of noodles. Let's just say it exploded with flavor (and a surprising amount of chili). My tastebuds were on fire! The noodles were amazing…but somehow I ended up with an extra order. Did they think I was still hungry? Did I accidentally order some secret "extra-spicy" dish? I’m still not sure. After my first bite, I started sweating and my eyes started to cloud over. It was an out-of-body experience. I swear I saw my life flash before my eyes!
Day 2: Temples, Temples Everywhere (And a Near-Death Experience with a Scooter)
- Morning: The majestic Borobudur temple! Seriously, jaw-dropping. The sunrise over the temple was epic. Trying to take a photo without a thousand other tourists in it? Nearly impossible. But hey, the architecture! The history! Honestly, I could have wandered around for hours. It was just so peaceful and humbling.
- Afternoon: Prambanan Temple Complex. So many temples! Stunning stone carvings, rich with history. I walked around getting lost in time. They even had a dance performance! The traditional art form was beautiful. But by now, the sun was punishing. Definitely appreciate the AC back at Ohana Suites at this moment!
- Evening: The Scooter Saga. Decided to embrace my inner daredevil and rent a scooter. (Famous last words, right?). I thought, "How hard can it be?". Turns out, VERY hard, especially when the road is filled with a chaotic ballet of cars, motorbikes, and pushcarts. Let’s just say there was a moment, a terrifying moment, involving a particularly aggressive tuk-tuk and a near ditch experience. My heart was doing the salsa. I parked the bike for the rest of the night. Still shaking when I got back to my room at Ohana Suites.
Day 3: Batik Battles and Javanese Karaoke Catastrophe
- Morning: A batik painting workshop. Tried my hand at creating a batik masterpiece. My "masterpiece" looks like something a toddler would create after a sugar rush. The instructor was kind and patient. Turns out batik is NOT as easy as the artists make it look.
- Afternoon: Street food safari! Yogyakarta is a foodie paradise! Tried gudeg (jackfruit stew) - delicious! Also, lots of fresh fruits, sweet treats, and the most amazing (and spicy!) sambal.
- Evening: Karaoke. Yes, you read that right. After a few cocktails, the idea of singing in a local karaoke bar seemed like a fantastic one. Turns out, my singing voice is NOT suited for public performance. The bar's a blur, the song choices were… well… let’s just say some of the locals looked slightly terrified. In retrospect, I think I may have also attempted some impromptu dance moves. I embarrassed myself. Everyone laughed. I had a blast. Now, I'm a bit tipsy and hoping nobody recorded that.
Day 4: The Sultan's Palace & The Market Mania
- Morning: The Kraton (Sultan's Palace). Walked through the grounds, saw the traditional buildings. Learnt about the royal family. It was elegant, really. It was nice to see a peek in the history and culture.
- Afternoon: Shopping at Beringharjo Market. This market is INSANE. A sensory overload of smells, sights, and sounds. Bargained for souvenirs, got completely lost in the labyrinthine stalls, and came out with treasures I'll probably never use. But it was AMAZING!
- Evening: Another night in Yogyakarta, another adventure. This time, I decided to just chill at the Ohana Suites. Poolside and read a book, got a massage. Enjoyed the peace and quiet. Washed the scooter saga and karaoke catastrophe out of my brain.
Day 5: Departure and the lingering taste of chili
- Morning: Final breakfast! Checked out of Ohana Suites, feeling strangely reluctant to leave. This place has grown on me. I mean, really, I may miss it.
- Afternoon: Last-minute souvenir shopping (because, you know, I can't resist). Airport bound. Reflected on the trip. Yogyakarta, you beautiful, messy, chaotic, and incredibly delicious place.
- Evening: Safe flight home (hopefully). I'm already thinking about the next time I can come back. I need to find out what was it in those noodles!
Overall:
This trip was NOT perfect. I got lost. I burned my mouth. I almost died on a scooter. But it was a genuine experience. Yogyakarta is a place that challenges you, surprises you, and leaves you craving more. And Ohana Suites? Well, it was the perfect place to come back to at the end of each very long but eventful day. Now, I'm going home.
Escape to Paradise: Hotel Italia Senigallia Awaits!
Escape to Paradise: Ohana Suites Camelia, Yogyakarta - You HAVE Questions, I (Maybe) Have Answers!
Okay, so first things first: Is this place REALLY "Paradise"? Sounds a bit...much, doesn't it?
What's the deal with the "Ohana" part? Is it actually family-friendly? Because my kids...well, they're *a lot*.
The Camelia Suites...are they worth the extra cash? Or should I just go basic?
Okay, the location. Is it actually convenient for exploring Yogya? Or am I stuck in the middle of nowhere?
Food, glorious food! What's the dining situation like? Anything beyond the usual hotel buffet fare?
About that pool… is it swimmable? Clean? (I'm a bit of a germaphobe, sue me!)
Seriously, what's the absolute BEST thing about this place? And what was the total disaster?
Okay, spill. Would you go back? And would you recommend it to your worst enemy? (Kidding!)
